In 1990, when its long standing supporter, the Soviet Union collapsed, Cuba, already decades under US embargo was facing an insurmountable wall. Without petroleum and fertilisers food shortages loomed everywhere.
But Cuba made a virtue of its predicament and went organic. People driven farms sprang up everywhere and ecologically sound practices were revived. By 1995 the organic farming movement had taken hold and food shortages receded. Today Cuba is Latin America's leader in food production indicators.
